Things to Do
Spend the day on historic Maria Island via 40min Maria Island Ferry. Check times and days on net. TIP - check out www.mariaislandcruises.com.au for excellent short cruises to Seal Island and the onto Maria Island. On the island you can walk the old township, museum and observe the wildlife. Longer walks for the energetic.
DIVERS, both novice and experienced, will love Maria’s clear waters, featuring all the inhabitants of the marine reserve i.e. the wreck of the Troy D, limestone caves, lobsters, sea dragons etc. Diving with the local, friendly seals is also possible. Underwater wilderness tours can be arranged with Island Scuba at 03 6257 1300.
For BIKE RIDERS and CLASSIC CARS we have undercover, lockup parking.
BOAT ramp is nearby and we have room to park your boat.
CLOSER TO HOME: Visit The Thumbs lookout, do cliff top, beach and forest walks, walk along the Old Convict Road. Excellent pizza and pasta is within walking distance, made with local produce. Cafes use local scallops, oysters and crayfish (in season). Orford has a 9 hole golf course (we have spare sets of clubs) and a bowls club. Bird watching. Chat to Chester, the Labrador. Pick and eat fruit from our little orchard or read in the garden. Have a drink and a yarn on the verandah at the end of the day. Orford is halfway between Port Arthur and Freycinet National Park, use us as a base.
